By Ira Hurles

It is important to be aware of what superfoods are if you want to achieve healthy weight loss. Typically plant foods, superfoods are loaded with plant nutrients referred to as phytonutrients. Additional nutrients run the list from vitamins, minerals, special fibers called prebiotics, and even more. With all the great things these plants foods contain, is it any wonder they're called super? And if that's not enough, studies have found that many of these superfoods can help in the prevention and treatment of many diseases because of specific properties they have. The list of benefits you'll get from superfoods is long and in addition to those benefits, you can use superfoods for weight loss.

In other articles on superfoods, we have mentioned yogurt as an excellent weight loss superfood. Most people don't know that there is an older form of yogurt, one that traces its roots in Russia. It's called Kefir, and while it's not a well-known kind of yogurt, it is actually one of the healthiest around. If this is the first time you're hearing about Kefir, know that it's a yogurt that's not at all like the yogurt you're used to drinking. Kefir's consistency is not at all like the consistency of the yogurt drinks you'd find in Western countries. Kefir is a yogurt drink that's a rich source of minerals, calcium, vitamins, and probiotic bacteria.

Did you know that if your diet is poor and you don't exercise on a regular basis, your body will start storing excess weight in your large intestines? Don't think that's significant? Did you know that when Elvis Presley's body was autopsied, they found more than 45 pounds of accumulated waste in his large intestines? That brings us to kiwi fruit because this fruit is loaded with great fiber. Kiwi also has lots of other nutrients that the body needs. Prebiotic factors are also present in kiwi in high concentrations. Prebiotics are the substances you cannot digest, but the beneficial bacteria in your digestive tract does eat them. Incorporating kiwi to your diet will promote regular bowel movement and keep excess waste from accumulating in your intestines.

Go for colourful berries and bright, leafy veggie foods. While these may seem like strangely different foods, their colourful natures are an indication of the rich array of nutrients contained. In these foods, the colours result from the presence of phenols, carotenoids, and other antioxidant related compounds. You may not associate antioxidants with losing weight, but they can help you in a roundabout way. Antioxidants help to kill harmful bacteria in your gut that slow down your system. You need not look far to find products advertised as metabolism boosting, yet these products are artificial in nature. Your metabolism will function at peak when you have a clean gut that results from eating these nutritious foods.

The Paleo diet is an example of a diet where you can incorporate superfoods. There are other diets out there but the Paleo diet seems to be a good fit because of it premise. Just imagine our ancestors from thousands of years ago subsisting mostly on a plant-based diet. You can adapt this to your own diet today by consuming plant superfoods in order to shed unwanted pounds.
